Idle Thoughts from Week One

Posted by Barry on September 3rd, 2007

1. They’re the Mountaineers by the way, since you’re wondering.Lloyd Carr has ALWAYS done too little with the talent he has on hand, but goodness this was ridiculous. That Mario Manningham guy is pretty good. You might want to throw it to him more often…. 2. Give the points and take whoever SYRACUSE is playing.A 42-14 beating at home to a mediocre(tm) WASHINGTON team??With the money you win, buy the ‘Cuse some new unis. PLEASE.The only thing that much loud orange is good for is finding the dead bodies after a lake effect blizzard.Too bad they can’t play DUKE in a futility bowl… 3. NOTRE DAME is worse than expected.Yet somehow they were favored in this game. Oh year, the lines are about evening out the bets… 4. OKIE STATE is as average as I expected, which is apparently a lot less than what others expected.Never did see the logic in this trendy upset pick at +6.5Though KANSAS STATE gave AUBURN more trouble than expected. 5. Classy move by USC’s PETE CARROLL on the extra pointto honor their deceased kicker from last year. 6.  7 yards rushing for VIRGINIA.  110 yards total offense?THAT’s a long plane ride home from WYOMING…. 7. NORTHERN COLORADO gave up 63 points to HAWAIIBut on the plus side managed to get off 7 punts without getting their kicker stabbed again…. 8. Wondering if Riley Dodge is rethinking changing his commitment from TEXAS to NORTH TEXAS to play for his dad 9. Pretty sure MINNESOTA is happy that Michigan bombed so bad  so no one notices how they blew it vs BOWLING GREEN. 10 Aggie related idle thoughtT’was nice watching the last team to kick the sh*t out of us in a bowl game kick the sh*t out of the second to last team who kicked the sh*t out of us in bowl game.  And Finally:The Virginia Tech stories were moving and emotionalbut I must say I’m surprised I didn’t hear anyone referencethe Bonfire Tragedy at A&M. The Aggies had to play Texas a mere TWO WEEKS after 12 students died building a bonfirethat directly relates to beating Texas in football. UNTIL NEXT WEEK WHEN WE LEARN:If TCU is for real vs TEXAS, who might not be. ARK STATE? In Austin??if NEBRASKA (at WAKE FOREST) is as solid as they looked. Then USC awaits the Huskers after that. Good luck with that.If MIAMI is as solid as their 31-3 win looked or if OKLAHOMA  really is as good as the 79 they hung on NORTH TEXAS BUT IF I HAD A MILLION DOLLARS, NEXT WEEKEND I’D BE IN ….Baton Rouge Louisiana.Time to see if LSU is really ready for a MNC run.If so, they’ll use VIRGINIA TECH as Tiger Bait.Death Valley. Saturday Night. It don’t get no better than that.Gentlemen, start your smokers…

T+1: Down go the Horns…..

What a beautiful thing it was to watch. The boys finally put it all together.

Amazed we were abled to run the ball down their throats.
Amazed that we were able to shut down their offense.
Amazed we were able to win without trying to expose their pass D.
Amazed that the missed extra point didn’t bite us in the butt.
Amazed that our inability to get ONE first down after the interception didn’t bite us in the butt (again)
Feels like 1984 all over again. Time to get the Aggie train rolling….

• Surprised that Miami pulled it together to knock off BC
• A big “you’re welcome” to Oklahoma. Hopefully the last favor we do for you for years to come.
• Surprised that Arkansas didn’t and lost to LSU.
• Which really screws Florida, who needed a highly ranked ARK team in the SEC championship.

I think Florida deserves a shot at Ohio State more than USC, but I also think it’s a moot argument since USC is going to ROLL a mediocre overrated Notre Dame team and get the slot anyways….

Idle Thoughts for Nov 12

Posted by Barry on November 25th, 2006

Wow.Where to begin. heartbreaking loss to the Huskers. A game we should have won.
But a great weekend back in Aggieland with college friends.

BAD first half (again)
BAD first half defense (again)
Questionable Big Ten ish play calling in first half in playing for field goal(s)
Much grumbling on student side among alums sitting around. Politically it ain’t playing well.
then….
GREAT second half (again)
GREAT second half defense (again)
GREAT second half adjustments (again)

Heartbreaking and demoralizing loss at the very end (again)

Interpretations:
We have very solid game coaches who make excellent adjustments.
We have enough talent to *compete* with almost anyone.
We do NOT have enough talent or difference makers to give us the depth to put teams away or shut them down.

But we are so very close. SO very close.

Changing coaches is NOT the answer.
Unfortunately a little more time is.

But next years schedule is brutal:
At Miami, At Tech, At Oklahoma, At Nebraska.

We’re going to have to continue to improve just to post another 8-4 next year.

Random thoughts:
Vast majority of players highlighted on Aggietron are sophomores, and others are more likely freshmen than juniors. Wow we are young. Wow are the youngun’s good.

Glad that Harrington isn’t a senior.

Wondering if McGee is hurt, cause his misses were B-A-D.
But then the next throw would be really solid.

Wondering if we didn’t use the Train cause he’s hurt.
But then why use him as a lead blocker???
Or have him throw the halfback pass?

If he’s not hurt, did we not run him because we didn’t have any holes in the line? We didn’t run him enough to really find out, with only 6 carries….
Why not let him wear THEM out?
VERY weird play calling in my book, and not popular with the natives.

And wondering why we keep playing to set up FGs rather than ignoring FGs and playing for first downs to bury an opponent…..Lloyd Carr-esque…..

Was fun to sit first deck on student side again. Bathrooms still smell the same….

Was fun to drink at Fox and Hound (the old Interurban for the oldtimers) and watch everyone in the room, Husker and Aggie, come together to root for the tsips to go down…..

Was rough to hear the cute young thing at the Chicken ask the back door bouncer why he didn’t card us,
and have him say “Cause they’re old”

Was nice to drink that long and hang out shooting pool with friends and spend like $30 instead of $100. College towns rule.

Was really rough to wake up Sat am after BBQ and several Shiners for dinner, then several more Bocks at the Chicken, then a quick slice of pizza at new northgate place as we wandered to midnight yell practice, then of course the mandatory run to Whataburger at 2 am…..

I’m too old to do that anymore.

Or at least to do it again Sat night. Which we tried to do anyways…. Ouch.

Was really really rough to realize the hot young thing at Fox and Hound who was flirting with us to improve her tip wasn’t even BORN when we enrolled at A&M….

Getting old sucks. Especially when we lose by one damn point (again) …

Random Thoughts…Week 5

Posted by Barry on October 10th, 2006

That’s the most unprepared, disorganized, and unfocused I’ve seen a Texas Aggie team play in years. But winning ugly ure beats losing….

Maybe I’m just an old fuddy duddy, but tuck in your damn jerseys and wear full sleeves. Look like an athlete who cares, not a “wife beatin’-cut-off Ozzy Osbourne-concert-t-shirt-wearin’-where’d-my-trailer-go” escapee from a Rob Zombie concert.

Wondering how many more slightly short and small but really smart record setting Texas HS qbs are gonna leave the state before tu, A&M, or Tech think “Hey, maybe we should give the kid who was 48-0 and threw for 26,000 yards in HS a freakin’ scholarship offer….” ?
Hey to the Detmer brothers, Drew Brees, and several others.

Auburn is overrated.
Arkansas is underrated.
USC is overrated this year.
OU is finally getting paid back for that mystical run of good luck they had for Stoops MNC.
Georgia Tennessee was one hellluva game before Georgia melted down.
And a hey to Wake Forrest, for a epic 4th quarter meltdown.
David Cutcliffe is seriously underrated.
Louisville–WVA is going to be a helluva game.
So will Florida–Georgia if Georgia recovers and finds a QB.
Florida might just be *really* good.
u. texas just might wiggle their way back into the MNC game before this is all said and done. dammit.
Joe Torre is overrated.
Yankee pitching from 6 years ago was underrated.
Chuck Amato is seriously getting on my nerves.

Random Thoughts…Week 4

Posted by Barry on September 25th, 2006

I think it was a slow week in college feetsball.

I think Michigan State is a disaster.

I think Del made a good wager that the first score in the Bama Razorbacks game would be a field goal.

I think its a helluva time for Chuck Amato to decide to show up.

I think its cool that Rutgers has reinvented itself.

I think Clemson might be pretty good.

I think Ole Miss is going to be looking for a new head coach before the end of this year….

I think Notre Dame better watch out for Purdue next week.

I think it’s interesting that Michigan AND Texas both won by exactly the large point spread they were supposed to.

I think Cal is going to screw my bet every single week.

I think I’m really glad the A&M vs Tech game is finally here so we can find out if the Aggies actually have improved and exactly what kind of team they will be after 4 games worth of experimenting.

Random Thoughts…Week 3

I think Army deserved to win that game

I think I hurt my ankle this weekend.
Jumping off the Notre Dame Band Wagon.
I think it’s a tweaking of an old injury.
I sprained it last weekend jumping ON their bandwagon

I think the job Petrino is doing at Louisville is remarkable.
He started the year top 15 with two Heisman candidates and 3 games into the season his RB is lost for the year, the QB is lost for half the year, and they are still 3-0 and rolling people. I think I’d check into his contract status if I was in the market
for a new coach….

I think TCU might watch out for Gary Patterson too.
Anyone who can keep Texas Tech out of the endzone will have suitors….

I think that as of 8:00 pm eastern I thought the Aggies had a real shot at 11-0 heading into Austin since Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Tech all struggled and didn’t look that good.
Plus they all have to come to Kyle.

I think that as of 1:00 am eastern the Aggies looked schizophrenic and have a real shot at ANYTHING from 11-0 to 6-5 heading into Austin

I think that anyone screaming about Coach Fran’s decision to go for it on 4th and 1 should really be screaming about our inability to GET one yard on Army.

I think the dude from Louisville who said
“This ain’t the same old Miami team”
was right.

I think the due from Nebraska who said they would
“beat USC and show the world that Nebraska’s back”
was wrong

I think the Texas Aggie football team was hung over.
I think the officials in the Oregon Oklahoma game were still drunk.
I think Larry Coker should get drunk.

I think the Big 12 deserves the same dogging I gave the Big 10+1
There’s Texas and not much else, and Texas ain’t all that either.

I think Army deserved to win that game

Yes it’s crude, rude, and socially unacceptable.

But I might have to get one of these….

And it made you laugh too didn’t it?

Aggies TE Martellus Bennet speaks

Posted by Barry on September 13th, 2006

“You’re doing something right if you have groupies.”

and he makes me laugh…

Much as I detest Texas Tech, ya gotta love Leach

When asked his opinion of the new clock rules in college football:

“I think simply stated that it’s the stupidest rule to come out in a significantly long time,” he said.

“I think this is such a great idea, maybe they should limit both teams to 20 plays, then we would really get them the games over quickly,” Leach said. “Then everybody go out and tailgate. The players and coaches can
mingle with the fans and really share in the whole game-day activity.”

From The Tonya Harding school of football….

Just makes ya wonder what he might have done had they been at a real football school….

“Reserve punter arrested for allegedly stabbing rival in kicking leg”

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) — The University of Northern Colorado’s reserve punter was arrested Tuesday, accused of stabbing his rival in his kicking leg.

Mitch Cozad, a sophomore from Wheatland, Wyo., allegedly attacked starting punter Rafael Mendoza in a parking lot in Evans on Monday night, Evans police Lt. Gary Kessler said.

Mendoza, the Bears’ first-string punter from Thornton, was treated and released from the North Colorado Medical Center Monday night. Coach Scott Downing said Mendoza will not punt for UNC in Saturday’s
game at Texas State University.

“I don’t know how long he’ll be out because I haven’t talked to the doctor,” Downing said.

Cozad, Mendoza and freshman Zak Bigelow had been in a three-way race for the starting punter’s job in preseason training. Mendoza has averaged 37.6 yards-per-punt on nine punts in the two games so far
this season.

Cozad is facing second-degree assault charges and was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday for a bond hearing.
