Barry’s off to Austin

Posted by Barry on July 20th, 2006

Travelling all day Friday the 21st, doing some personal stuff all weekend, then meeting with a client/vendor on a long term project on Monday, then travelling back on Tuesday. Its wonderful living far away from the urban masses, but they don’t put airports out here so travelling is time consuming.

Movie Pick

Syriana, the George Clooney flick. Good movie and interesting stories about the state of the world and business in the Middle East, and a nice job of showing how everyone in a situation has their own vested interests and how they each don’t necessarily have much to do with someone else’s. Convenient bedfellows and all that. They do a good job of not preaching one point of view over another.

I’m torn…

One the one hand I’m a huge Dallas Stars fan. I still consider them MY team, despite the fact that its been 7 years now since I was a season ticket holder, and since they won the Stanley Cup. Coincidence? I think not.

So it pains me to see them sign Matthew Barnaby, quite possibly the most annoying, irritating, and downright NUTS player in the NHL. And pretty much USELESS in the much improved New NHL ™ The guy can’t score, or skate, and he takes DUMB penalties all the time. He starts fights, then gets punched in the face, then laughs in the other guys face while he gets his butt handed to him. The man seriously has a screw loose.

After last years playoff debacle, hey to Grant and his Avalanche, maybe this guy is what the Stars need. But it really sucks to see your team acquire the guy you can’t stand the most.

World Cup Soccer

Posted by Barry on July 10th, 2006

Now that the grand event is over for another four years, I must sheepishly admit I had a dismal performance in a World Cup pool. Somehow I decided to make my team picks without even THINKING about the first round groups and resulting brackets. A novice rookie mistake, which is sick considering that I PLAYED competitive soccer as kid all the way from youth travelling teams thru two years in college. Hell, I’ve actually BEEN to the World Cup for goodness sakes, and I certainly know the format. How the HELL could I not factor in the groupings? How could I manage to pick ALL 4 teams in one group, thus ensuring two of my teams would be eliminated quickly? How could I manage to not pick ANY teams from two other groups, considering at least two teams HAD to get thru. I finished second to last. It’s just plain embarrassing….
